Injury concerns surrounding Carlos Ulberg could reshape the light heavyweight division, with Khalil Rountree Jr. emerging as a leading contender.
There is officially a new light heavyweight champion—and he’s in incredible form. Carlos Ulberg claimed the title after knocking out former champion Jiří Procházka in the first round at UFC 327, extending his winning streak to ten fights.
However, there is one concern. Ulberg appears to have suffered a leg injury during the fight, which could potentially impact his first title defense.
What the UFC decides next will largely depend on the severity of that injury. While fans await further updates, several possible scenarios are already being discussed regarding Ulberg’s future—as well as other fighters who secured important wins in Miami.
Carlos Ulberg, Light Heavyweight Champion
The light heavyweight division seems almost cursed. Jiří Procházka was forced to vacate the title in 2022, followed by a draw between Jan Błachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev later that year. In 2023, Jamahal Hill also had to give up the belt due to injury.
Now, Carlos Ulberg could be facing a similar situation, as concerns grow over a possible knee injury—despite just winning the title. It’s an unusual and frustrating pattern for the division.
Even if Ulberg’s injury turns out to be minor, there are very few clear contenders for his first title defense. If he’s able to return in the near future, giving the opportunity to Khalil Rountree Jr.—or even Magomed Ankalaev—would not be a bad option.
Both fighters are coming off losses, but realistically, the division lacks stronger alternatives at the moment. Rountree, in particular, showed he can compete at a high level, having gone toe-to-toe with Procházka back in October.
His performance was arguably more convincing than Magomed Ankalaev, who suffered a loss to Alex Pereira on the same card. Neither fighter is a perfect contender for a title shot right now, but if Carlos Ulberg is healthy enough to defend his belt, Khalil Rountree Jr. appears to be the most reasonable option.
If Ulberg’s knee injury turns out to be serious, the division could move toward an interim title bout. In that case, Ulberg would likely face the winner once he’s fully recovered—possibly sometime next year.
